Week of Welcome
Week of Welcome is an annual event that takes place during the first week of the Fall semester on campus. The University of Alberta’s Student Union provides an abundance of fun, food, and excitement for all students. There’s a variety of activities for students to ease into the new academic school year. So get ready for free pancake breakfasts, live music, BBQ, Beer Gardens, and more! It’s the perfect place to meet new students, build friendships, and discover the university. Don’t forget to explore the clubs fair!
Previous nightly shows include comedic performances by hypnotist Wayne Lee, music performances by big-name bands such as USS, and double feature movie nights. The mainstage event will occur in the Quad on the Week of Welcome’s Saturday. This will be a massive concert you won’t want to miss!
Student Union Building (SUB) Events
During the year, students are encouraged to participate in weekly and monthly events that are run by the University of Alberta’s Student Union! These events include trivia games, movie nights, dodgeball tournaments, and AntiFreeze. AntiFreeze is a campus-wide student competition that pits teams of 10 against each other in various challenges that test your team’s strength, endurance, creative powers, and an ability to yell.
On-Campus Pubs
Did you know that the University of Alberta’s on-campus pubs usually have events going on? Belt out your favourite songs during karaoke nights at Room at the Top (RATT) or check out Deweys for live music! Explore their websites for event updates.
Sports
Get out there and cheer on your teams! There are a number of sporting events to snag tickets for. If you haven’t been to one yet, then check out a football, volleyball, or basketball game! They are lots of fun.
Festivals
These are not always at the University of Alberta campus; however, they are worth checking out!
Head over to the Heritage Festival, or ‘Heritage Days’. It’s free! This takes place over the August long weekend and celebrates various cultures of the residents in Edmonton through performances and food. In fact, the international food is a major highlight of this festival!
Are you looking for entertainment? There is also the Fringe Theatre Festival, known as “the Fringe”. This is the largest fringe theatre festival in North America. It’s comprised of small shows that are put on by theatre troupes or individual artists. Expect to find a great variety of theatre here! Additionally, it is easily reachable from the University of Alberta campus.
