Freshman 15 hits students in different ways. Unfortunately, those extra pounds can be an issue. That’s why it is important to take advantage of the fitness resources offered at York University. It is easy to get lost in your studies and neglect exercise because you want to ace your exams. However, it is important to stay active because it keeps your mind and body both strong and sharp. Here are three ways to stay active while being a university student:
The Tait McKenzie Centre
The Tait McKenzie Centre is a multipurpose sport and recreation facility located next to the Pioneer Village Subway Station. It’s a three-story building offering a variety of facilities that help students stay active. Facilities that the Tait McKenzie Centre offers:
- York Lions Stadium
- fitness center/gym
- swimming pool
- studio rooms
- outdoor tennis courts
Some amenities are free for students whereas others (i.e. the gym) come with a small fee. A gym that costs $15/year is one of the best gym memberships I have ever bought! The gym includes free weights and a place for cardio machines such as the elliptical and treadmills.
Varsity Sports and Intramural Sports
Another great way to get active is to join a sports team. York University offers varsity sports, which allows your team to compete against teams at other universities. They also offer intramural sports, where students compete against other students at the same university. There are a plethora of teams available including basketball, cross country, lacrosse, and tennis. Check out their website for information on all York University sports teams to find out how you can get involved.
Online Fitness Classes
Instead of working out alone, try a recreational fitness class! This comes with an additional fee; however, because of the pandemic, York University is offering free online fitness classes to all students. The classes range between 30 to 60 minutes and include Zumba, Muay Thai, and Cardio Boot Camp. The schedule can be found on this site: https://yorkulions.ca/sports/2016/4/15/instructional-classes.aspx From my experience, it’s worth trying! I’ve already done the Muay Thai class and it’s one of my favorite ways to stay active at home while learning how to defend myself.
Fitness might seem like a struggle with your class schedule and studying, but your priority should be your health. Health comes first, so it is important to take care of your body by staying active. York University offers a variety of options and ways to stay active during the school year, so check them out!
