Academic Support at Capilano University

Academics is of course at the core of every university experience, so it’s important when you’re choosing where you’re going to study that you’re able to get the proper support to help you do well. 

At Capilano University, there are tons of different services and resources to aid you in your academics: academic advising, learning support services, webinars, courses, learning centres and so much more. It’s important to take advantage of these resources and services while you’re in school because they are there to help you succeed and make the most out of your university experience.

Academic Advising

Capilano University has academic advising available for students. You can book an in-person same day appointment with an advisor Monday to Thursday 9am-4pm, or a virtual appointment Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm to 3pm there are drop-in academic advising sessions online where you can just go to the website and click on a link to join a session. Note that drop-in sessions are about 10 to 15 minutes long and if you need a more in-depth appointment than that, you would have to schedule a program planning session through the appointment booking system. Remember than to qualify for an in-depth program planning session, you would need to have 60 or more credits, or be in a complex circumstance.

Learning Support Services

Capilano University has Learning Support Services available where you can find academic support. Enhance your academic performance through teaching strategies that help you efficiently and effectively study, strengthen your learning both inside and outside of the classroom and change your academic results into the results that you want. There are also tons of learning support skills webinars available for students throughout the academic year.

University Success Strategies Courses

There are two 3-credit course that help prepare students for learning success at university.

These courses cover things like how to manage your time, effective note-taking, strategies for reading and studying, test-taking, presentation skills, and how to make the best use of university resources.

Math Learning Centre

Capilano University offers its students a wonderful Math Learning Centre. During scheduled hours, students can drop by to get some one-on-one assistance with subjects in mathematics and statistics related to a course you are taking at Capilano University. The Math Learning Centre’s drop-in hours could differ from semester to semester so make sure you are always checking the website before you decide to go for a drop-in session.

Writing Centre

The Writing Centre is another awesome academic service that Capilano University offers. At the Writing Centre, the instructors can help you with a number of questions and concerns you have with regards to your writing and writing process. Whether you’re having trouble understanding a course text, need feedback on a draft or want help with using MLA, APA or another academic style, they’re here for you. They’re also a great resource for students who want to get a better understanding of academic and integrity and how to avoid plagiarism.

We all need help from time to time.

Asking for help is a great step to ensuring our growth and helps with our learning. If you are struggling or unsure about the program you are currently in, make sure to also visit your faculty’s academic advising resources so that you can get some guidance on what path you should take in your university studies.

Academic supports are so important because you want to do the very best you can throughout your university years. Take advantage of the variety of academic services and supports that the university offers. They are there to help you with whatever it is that you need; plus, these services are technically paid for by you through your tuition and fees. Tutorial and help centres are there to help you improve on the subject matter you are studying as well as give you tips and advice to help you succeed in all of your courses thus, its important to use and access these services throughout your academic life.
