Best Scholarships and Bursaries for SFU Students

If you’re in the middle of the application process, you’re probably not excited to fill out more. I know, it’s an extensive process; however, if you take a little more time to complete scholarship or bursary applications you could earn money for your hard work! Universities have great scholarships and bursaries in place to recognize outstanding student initiative, academics, and more, and Simon Fraser University is no different! Hopefully this quick guide can help you get the application process rolling!

For Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents coming from High School

SFU Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarships (Application Required)

Scholarship description (from website): SFU recognizes high school students who demonstrate excellence in both their academic and extracurricular activities.  The value of a scholarship may range from $10,000 up to an amount sufficient to cover all tuition and mandatory supplementary fees normally required for the completion of a student’s first undergraduate degree at SFU. 

What does the application require?

The application for these scholarships includes an academic reference, community involvement reference, and items on this To-Do List, which will be available to you with your undergraduate applicant sign-in. 

Application period (Fall): October 5 – December 17

Supporting documents deadline: January 31 (following the application period)

Minimum requirement: grades in the 90% range or a minimum of 31 IB (International Baccalaureate points)

Scholarship value: ranges from $10,000+ to cover tuition and mandatory supplementary fees (for more information, click here) (additional funding may also be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need)

When will you be notified: mid-March to mid-May following the earlier deadlines

Schulich Leader Scholarships (Nomination Required, Application Required, for STEM Students Only- Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

Scholarship description (from website): Schulich Leader Scholarships are prestigious entrance scholarships awarded to high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at participating universities in Canada and Israel. The value of these scholarships are as follows:

Students enrolled in a Science, Technology or Mathematics undergraduate degree program:

  • Value: $80,000, paid in 4 annual installments
  • Number: TBD by March
  • Term: Fall only

Students enrolled in Engineering undergraduate degree program:

  • Value: $100,000, paid in 4 annual installments
  • Number: TBD by March 
  • Term: Fall only

You must be nominated by your high school in order to apply (there is one nominee per school).

What does the application require?

The universities you wish to attend, your top three achievements (academic or other- 50 words max per achievement), an essay demonstrating why you should win (600 words), an optional essay to outline extenuating circumstances (250 words), a short-answer to identify where you see yourself in 10 years (50 words), two single-page letters of reference including emails and telephone numbers, a copy of your most up-to-date transcript, and a headshot profile image. 

Deadline to submit a nominee: January 27

Deadline for nominee to submit an application: February 17

Scholarship winners finalized: June 15

H.Y Louie and Lohn Entrance Award (Application Required)

What does the application require?

One completed community reference form and a summary of your achievements and activities demonstrating your involvement. This includes volunteer work, school or community involvement, extracurricular activities, and artistic or athletic interests in 500 words maximum. (Description taken from the website)

Application period (Fall): November 1- April 30

Supporting documents deadline: April 30

Minimum requirement: grades in the 80% range or International Baccalaureate (IB) score

Scholarship value: $5,000 (one installment)

Number of scholarships granted: 18
